Series Two; Who is God and What Does He Want From Me?

15 Jun Series Two; Who is God and What Does He Want From Me?

Dear Relevance Family,

Thank you for joining us at the Tent yesterday to worship on a rainy day! We love rain! Rain signifies showers of blessings and we pray that you were blessed by the music and the message.

We started our 12 week series “The God Connection” on Sunday. This is an exciting series to explore the 12 most asked questions about God. The first question we discussed is: “Who is God and what does He want from me?”

Now, that’s a great question!

To answer this we looked at a beautiful story in Chapter 4 of the book of John in the New Testament of the Bible. This story is about a woman who meets Jesus at a well when going to fetch water. This woman is a Samaritan – a group that were looked down upon by the Jewish people at that time. Not only is she a Samaritan woman, she is full of brokenness and pain and feels so rejected by her own community because they judge her because of her past that she completely avoids them! Instead of going to fetch water in the cool of the morning – with all the other women – she prefers to go in the heat of the day!

That’s how wonderful God is – he always waits for us at our hottest moments: those moments when we feel most abandoned, lost, rejected and alone- He is there waiting for us! Wow!

And not only was Jesus there waiting for His divine appointment with this woman, He did not reject or judge her! She was so surprised that he – a Jewish Rabbi (bible teacher and holy man) would choose to speak to her. Jesus just loves! He looks beyond all the things that we choose to define ourselves with: our pain, our fears, our mistakes, our past and our brokenness, and He sees us and loves us as we are!

In spite of her past disappointments in former relationships Jesus offers her a lasting relationship with Himself and the fulfillment she has always been longing for.

Jesus says to her “Everyone who drinks this water [from the well] will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.”

We all have thirsts – things that we are longing and hoping for. Jesus says come to me and drink from me! He longs to quench our thirst by giving us the answers we need to the questions we have. When we come to God thirsty He promises in His Word that He will fill us.

But how do we come to God? To come to God we need to know who He is. We need to be aware of His sovereignty, His power and His love for us. Then we need to come to Him as we are. The Message Bible puts it beautifully when it describes the kind of people God is looking for: “those who are simply and honestly themselves before Him in their worship. God is sheer being itself – Sprit. Those who worship Him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.”

So who is God and what does he want from us? God is a Sovereign Spirit who created us in love and seeks our love and worship of Him. Its a love story!

And that’s what Relevance is all about – going back to the heart of worship where its all about God.

See you next Sunday! Feel free to share your comments and questions here.
